No Place Like Home

I'm back home after a week in California -- I was mostly there for business, but got to see some old friends and have a little fun, too.

It's kind of weird to visit a place that I once called "home", but while there to feel a very long way from home. My wife went with me, and even though she was born and raised in California, she commented on the return flight, as our plane touched down in Nashville, "It's good to be home."

That may not sound like much, but you have to understand that we moved here to Nashville a little over a year ago, completely without a real plan, and with no idea whether things would work out or not. We left behind a secure and comfortable situation, and honestly didn't know if we were making a good decision or a huge mistake. I wish I had some neat story like "We felt led by the Spirit" or something, but I don't. We just had restless souls that felt like we no longer wanted to stay where we were, and decided to set out and see where we ended up. I do feel like we ended up where we were "supposed to be", but in saying that, I also wonder if that would have been true wherever we chose, as long as we were "seeking first the Kingdom of God" -- which hopefully we are, though in a sort of clumsy and imperfect way.

Now that I'm back, I feel a little out of touch -- I didn't get a chance to read my favorite blogs while I was gone. And as I pretty much expected, I have returned to a mountain of unread new entries at each blog. So off I go to try and catch up...

  2. Okay, here's the deal. You have to tell me immediately when you post a new blog. Just drop in and say.

    "N.P." or something.

Because... this post hit home for me. We are no longer working for the Church and my old job just got filled. I will be finishing school in feb. and we are considering a move. We are moving north, thats for sure. And I must say, I do love that Nashville.

we are also considering a visit to Nashville in a few weeks. You guys up for a double date?

  3. Seth - You betcha. I've been looking forward to you guys visiting for a long time.

Also, if you guys start to seriously consider moving to this area, consider yourselves to have a complete and full service "transitional team" already in place (seriously). Even though I had no family here, and didn't actually know anybody, we had a young couple who "adopted" us during our transition, and this guy actually met me at the hotel when I flew in to look for an apartment, and drove me around to arrange utilities and get settled in.

It was quite amazing, and it all happened because his sister was traveling with the Peace Child drama for YWAM, and stayed with friends of ours in California while they were playing at our church, and she happened to mention that she was from this area and had a brother who lived here.

It made the transition so much easier. My wife and I are always looking for ways to help other people who are relocating here, since we know how hard and tumultuous it can be.

  4. What an incredibly kind offer. Consider it taken.

    That calls for a poem.

May your cats be plentiful and your burdens light.
May all that pass by your home,
    see your warm warm light.
    May everyone taste
    the kindess of your soup
    and may nary a soul,
    step in some kitty poop.

Seriously, thanks for the offer. We will be contacting as soon as that move takes place.
